HM headers and Lukey exhaust?

But I'm surprised now about the straight through muffler recommendation; so you're advocating that as being a much more significant mod over the headers with twice the performance gain?

From what I understand, swapping the headers for the HM's will reduce some of the drone, so maybe I need to do both. I might just start with the muffler, sounds easier and cheaper?
Can anyone recommend any particular muffler? (I guess the OEM VRX are not available?)

OEM VRX, GTVi or sports off a wreck will be fine. AWD muffler has a shorter pipe so if you want direct fitment, get an AWD unit.

My redback drones horribly but I love it. If you want to avoid drone, don't get a redback. Lukey is popular.

HM headers will sort out the drone. Mine droned with the OEM straight through muffler. The immediate realisation of driving off with the HMs was how quiet it was (no more drones). It also creates a little burbling noise.

Magnaflow part number 14586 polished stainless, 2.5" in/out, Offset/Centre, straight through, full size type.
I know I sound like a broken record as I always recommend this muffler when the suggestion of choice comes up in a forum & yes I have one fitted to my AWD Verada. Compared to the Lukeys I've heard it isn't quite as growly but instead is deeper & beefier sounding which I love. It's also virtually identical in size compared to the stock muffler & is the same Offset/Centre piping configuration. Just get the exhaust shop to use the existing hangers off the old muffler & fit a shortish downward facing tip & you're good to go.

It's pretty much the same volume at idle and only marginally louder than a stock baffled Magna muffler when on the gas & it gives a nice wail at WOT.
Personally, I'd invest in the HM perry headers with Y pipe - For the AWD this is a must do if you are chasing better performance.

Apart from the T join (instead of a proper Y join) between the banks in the AWD the exhaust system in the later 3rd gens was quite reasonable for a locally made family car, with the only difference between the "sports" badged (VRX, GTVi etc) cars and the others being the use of the straight through muffler (pretty much a Lukey LR-2779). Mitsubishi's published figures indicate the muffler would be worth 8kW (peak).

The info I have suggests that the HMs could be expected to show a gain of no more than about 4kW (peak - a little bit more than that is gained lower in the rev range).

Just with the rear muffler only, I'd be looking to get either a stock muffler or a as close to stock as possible option. I had the rear muffler changed on mine, with stock headers/Y-pipe, and the drone was HORRENDOUS. Bad.

Replaced the headers with HM and the drone went away.

I'm not sure what brand/model muffler was put on, for reference, but it's a straight through thing and quite compact. I'll post a part number in the morning. If you just want to do the rear muffler the one that's on my car would be one to avoid.

kwawd, kim aka kj380 is selling magnaflow and berklee mufflers. best to get one of them and then the hm headers. as wytwun mentioned, the straight through muffler will bring your flywheel power from 154kw to 159kw. adding the hm headers will increase it to at least fwd sports/vrx flywheel power of 163kw plus a couple more to 165kw.

I hadn't thought about fitting. Do these after market mufflers just mount to the existing OEM brackets/hangers on the AWD or is there some modification required to fit them?

And is anyone else able to comment on the Magnaflow product versus the Lukey?

You get the exhaust shop to cut the hangers off your original muffler and weld them on to your new muffler they will also weld on the muffler to the flange pipe. For an exhaust shop, this is a straight forward job, nothing overly technical or difficult. As I said previously, this particular magnaflow is virtually identical in size compared to the original muffler. I'll pull out the camera and post up some pics later on when I'm back from work. I'll also get a sound clip organized and put that up also.

As for another opinion on the magnaflows, send AMC member ALSCALL a pm. He has the exact same muffler on his AWD i believe, but with a custom stainless steel mid pipe section. Mine's just the stainless muffler & stainless flange pipe only (though we both have the HM perry headers with Y pipe fitted to our AWD's)
